WABC Talk Show Host & Guardian Angels’ Founder Inspires Crowd
[Brooklyn, NY] – Curtis Sliwa, Guardian Angels’ Founder and WABC radio host, made big news during his guest appearance at a meeting of the Brooklyn Young Republican Club. Sliwa, who, beginning December 3rd, will no longer be at WABC radio due to Don Imus’ new show on the station, announced that he will take a direct role in reinvigorating the city’s Republican Party and possibly run for office himself. Sliwa spoke to a standing room only crowd at Peggy O’Neill’s in Bay Ridge, which erupted in applause several times throughout his impassioned speech and his remarks concluded with a standing ovation.
Sliwa stated, "The Republicans have to get out in the streets and compete with the Democrats, who take blue-collar, working-class neighborhoods for granted. This is a declaration of war, the battle must begin. No election should be avoided and every election district should be competitive." Sliwa said he will focus on building a movement of younger Republicans in the City so that the Party has a bench of future candidates that need to be given the opportunity to run for local office. Sliwa added, "I’m hopeful that this is the beginning of a new era in New York City politics, where a vibrant, competitive, issues driven Republican Party provides a credible alternative to the machine politics of the Democratic Party. "
On his own plans for elective office, Sliwa said "They’re all open".
Bob Capano, President of the Brooklyn Young Republican Club, stated, "We were thrilled that Curtis recognized the work of our Club and attended our meeting to unveil his new plans. His passionate, common-sense ideas and solutions will help the Republican Party grow in Brooklyn and New York City. He will inspire a new generation to take to the streets to ensure that Brooklyn becomes a two-party borough. We are looking forward to continuing to work closely with him."
Among the topics Sliwa also addressed was the need for Republicans to campaign on the issue of school vouchers, particularly in minority communities. Sliwa also cited the need for initiative and referendum, and stated his opposition to increases in property tax rates, water bill increases, and a congestion fee to enter Manhattan.
Like any real New Yorkers, Sliwa, Capano and those in attendance ended the meeting with eating their fair share of pizza pies!
The Brooklyn Young Republican Club presented Sliwa with honorary membership to the club in recognition of his "lifelong commitment to your home borough of Brooklyn and to the City of New York, your unwavering belief in and pursuit of justice, your dedication to empowering communities and individuals, your tireless efforts to educate our youth in the value of volunteerism, your service as an exemplar of tolerance and inclusion, your selfless contributions to community programs and public service, your one of a kind, unapologetic voice of the people, your ascendancy as reigning ‘Stickball Commissioner’ of New York City and your indomitable message of conservatism and hope that has served as an inspiration to young Republicans everywhere."
