This past weekend on December 17th, the Brooklyn Young Republican Club ventured out to the Bereca Baptist Church to host a unique Christmas holiday party. Situated in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Canarsie, the Bereca Baptist Church kindly offered their space to use for cooking the food sponsored and bought by the club. Yet, this was not just any holiday party. This party was organized by the club’s president Brandon Washington, specifically for the children, and families of incarcerated parents. The club and church members who volunteered, ended up serving nearly one hundred people which included the kids and relatives of incarcerated parents, church members, and volunteers. This event also gave an opportunity for the club to find out the concerns of Canarsie families.

To ascertain these concerns, the club provided surveys for families to fill out, which asked what were the issues these families felt were the most pressing in their community. The club’s goal is to eventually work with the people living in Brooklyn to address these issues that are facing most Brooklynites today. At the end of the day, families walked away feeling their needs addressed, happy from the festivities, and most importantly fed! This event is one of many to come, that will make sure the club fulfills its responsibility of giving back to the community.
